It is certainly important to start early. Awareness sessions to students in a fun and interesting way are essential to build early acknowledgement on environmental issues and conservation needs. It is expected that by having early awareness and regular reinforcement in school and communities, the environmental concerns will internalize as culture as they grow.

The awareness raising to communities is important to inform and introduce Suaka Elang’s existence for eagle conservation, eagle roles in ecosystem and its threat. It also crucial for receiving communities’ acknowledgement on their role and benefits in conserving forest, which holds water for life and are home for a huge variety of species, including eagle. With communities’ acknowledgement, their supports on conservation activities are likely to be strong and sustain.

On 19 May 2010, PSE organized socialization on conservation education to elementary schools in Kecamatan Cigombong, which was held in Raptor Conservation Education Centre in Kampung Loji, Desa Pasir Jaya, Kecamatan Cigombong. Since this event involves participation of most of elementary schools in Cigombong, the implementation was consulted and coordinated with Unit Pelaksana Teknis Kecamatan (UPTK) Dinas Pendidikan Nasional Kecamatan Cigombong. This socialization was attended by approximately 25 teachers and schools principals, the representative from UPTK Cigombong, representative of community leaders of adjacent kampongs, representative of CGS and YBUL. Acknowledging the need of up to date and reliable information on environmental education as well as common responsibility for conservation action, the teachers and UPTK clearly showed their enthusiasm and pledge to support the awareness activity that will be implemented by Suaka Elang. However, some schools were disappointed as disclosed that due to time and financial constrains, the awareness sessions in this phase can only be conducted in 11 elementary schools. It is hoped that in the near future all elementary schools in Cigombong can benefited this activity. In this meeting, it was also agreed that the schedule for implementation and school selection will be done by UPTK Cigombong.

On 16 April 2010, PSE organized socialization to local community, which was held in Raptor Conservation Education Centre in Kampung Loji, Desa Pasir Jaya, Kecamatan Cigombong. This meeting was attended by approximately 39 community members and community leaders from 2 kampongs, Kampung Loji dan Kampung Selong, as well as the officials from local Komando Rayon Militer (Koramil). The objective of this activity is to introduce the existence of Suaka Elang and its activities.

In the discussion session, participants showed high enthusiasm to participate in this Socialization. They hope to get the benefits with the Eagle Sanctuary. Socialization activities also successfully identified a group of people who are willing to supply  eagle’s feed through guinea pig breeding business.

Rabbits are in high demand for sate, particularly in Bogor and Sukabumi areas. rabbit breeding, as an alternative IGA, has good potential for growth since supply is limited to meet increasing demand.

TRAINING ON RABBIT BREEDING. On 15 July 2010, YPLK3 organized training on rabbit breeding, which was opened by the Head of Desa Cipeuteuy, Mr. Acun Mansyur, and attended by more than 40 people from two Dusun, Dusun Cisarua dan Dusun Cipeuteuy, and representative from YBUL. The training was delivered by Mr. Muhammad Nursyid and facilitated by Mr. Jueni from YPLK3.
Main topics discussed in this training include: (i) stable construction and its maintenance, (ii) rabbit breeding type and selection, (iii) reproduction, (iv) type and schedule for feeding and health check, (v) common disease and treatment.
The participants from the two Dusun showed high enthusiasm to participate in this training. In the original plan, the training was to be delivered to 20 participants; however, due to high interest, the head of village requested YPLK3 to accommodate more villagers to benefit this sharing session. Several participants are experienced in local rabbit breeding for meat sale; but most participants were new to breeding rabbit for pet. During the session, participants were actively asking questions on feeding, maintaining stable cleanliness, and utilization of rabbit waste for organic fertilizer.

DEVELOPMENT OF RABBIT PEN. After the rabbit breeding training, 25 May 2010, the villagers conducted group discussion on rabbit pen development and group organizational establishment. This discussion was facilitated by YPLK3 field coordinator. Rabbit breeders in Dusun Cisarua were led by Ujang, while Rabbit breeders in Dusun Cipeuteuy will be discussed in June 2010.

Rabbit breeding was agreed to be managed individually; therefore, rabbit pens are placed in each community houses. However, these pens were developed together in gotong royong with other group member. To date, there has been 10 rabbit pens developed by rabbit breeders in Dusun Cisarua, or about 50% of all pens to be developed. To increase ownership of the activity, YPLK3 only act as facilitator and supervisor for pen development process and limitedly provide materials that the villagers do not have, such as plastic roof and nails. These pens development is expected to be completed by end of June 2010.

In December year, YBUL and Chevron surveyed initial site for project implementation in (1) Desa Pulosari, Kec. Kalapa Nunggal, Sukabumi and (2) Desa Ciasmara, Kec. Pamijahan, Bogor.
The objective of the survey is to evaluate the condition of existing pico-hydro and assess local technical visibility for electricity generation.

The result are: (i) The site in Pulosari is not recommended for natural resource utilization due to limited water-flow in dry season and aluvulial land-structure along the river band, which is vulnerable for land-slide. (ii) The site in Ciasmara is technically visible for natural resource utilization due to steady water-flow in dry season  but revitalizing existing pico-hydro will be very expensive.

Comparing these two sites, initial recommendation was to improve existing community-based efforts on traditional mills for generating electricity should the community wanted. However, since the PLN poles was present, the community request Chevron assistance for installation fee.

This issue was clarified on 11 May 2010 through a small meeting, which was held in Balai Kelompok Tani Ciasmara. This meeting was attended by Mr. Dali Mulia (Chevron), Gita Gemilang and Ligan Panggabean (YBUL) and Kades Ciasmara, several community leaders. In this meeting, Chevron clarified that electrification is  central and/or regional government authority, in which PLN acted as implementer. Chevron can  help, but limited to training, cooperative/micro-financing development, and education. Pak Dali further explained that Chevron did assist YBUL to see the river utilization potential for electricity generation in Ciasmara. But Chevron’s role is only introducing the site and the community.

In this meeting, YBUL also clarified the finding of the survey. Although the potential is promising; however, the turbine, generator and control panels are broken and need to be replaced. In addition, power house, intake dam and penstock require new civil work. The revitalization cost is closed to the cost of building a new. Thus, considering the high revitalizing cost and the existence of PLN poles in the lower end of the village, revitalization of existing pico-hydro in Desa Ciasmara is not recommended.
