Wind energy technology is a technology that utilizes the speed of wind turbines and converts it into electricity.

Wind energy is harnessed through the converter wind turbines. YBUL’s  primary interest is in the low wind speed regime around 3 to 4 m/s. This wind regime is found in the eastern part of the country, such as Sumba, West Timor, Flores and South Sulawesi.

The eastern part of the country has little fossil fuel resources, but quite a few places in the region are endowed with wind of low speed regime. This makes the utilization of wind energy highly valuable for the area. In addition, some experiences with running wind turbines in the region have proven to be beneficial.

YBUL was commissioned by the USAID to evaluate their wind turbine project in the islands of Sumba and West Timor. It was found out that the initial requirements for entry of renewable energy technology, for that matter any technology, into the rural community, such as preparedness of the community to accept the technology and utilize them, was missing. As a result, the sense of belonging of the members of the community on the system was lacking and the systems were uncared for.
